| Advancement opportunities at Camp Wanocksett |
Advancement in the BSAAdvancement is one of eight methods used in delivering the Scouting programThe Boy Scouts of America provides recognition for Scout achievements. The advancement program allows Scouts to progress from rank to rank. A fundamental purpose of advancement is the self-confidence a young man acquires from his participation in a troop. Brownsea AdventureBrownsea Adventure is a special camp area that helps new and younger Scouts master the skills they need to complete the Tenderfoot Scout, Second Class Scout, and First Class Scout requirements. Scouts learn the basic Scout skills they need for advancement, as well as enjoy special programs available only for newer campers. Philosophy on Rank AdvancementWe will make sure our training of each young Scout is held to the highest standards – we will teach the Scouts to the skill, but not necessarily the requirement. It is up to the Scoutmaster to validate the Scout’s knowledge of the particular skill in question before he/she signs off the requirement. At the end of the week, each troop will receive a sheet with a list of skills that each boy completed during their time at Brownsea. Earning Merit Badges at CampCamp Wanocksett has two structured merit badge sessions in the morning and one more in the afternoon, followed by an open program format. During this afternoon program, merit badge times are interspersed with a variety of challenging and creative programs devised by the Wanocksett Staff. Merit badge sessions are intended to be fun learning experiences, not lecture and classroom work. It is the responsibility of the individual Scout to complete any written requirements, field observations, or other work that cannot be completed in the formal sessions during their free time if they wish to complete the badge at camp. Merit badges that boys have the opportunity to work on at camp, along with comments regarding difficulty and pre-camp requirements can be found on the annual Merit Badge Comments form. |
