| A typical day at Cub Scout camp |
|
9:00 AM: The parade of yellow school busses pulls up in front of the dining hall. A sea of smiling faces pours out of each one. The sounds of children's laughter fills the air. Den chiefs and volunteers like watchful shepards herd the boys in their den into some semblance of order as the camp staff marches in for the morning flag ceremony. A reverent silence falls over the assembled throng. Boys solemnly salute as the flag is raised high into the morning sun. "Good moring campers!" cries the Program Director. The thunderous reply rattles the windows of the dining hall. Another day at camp has begun. 11:00 AM: Den 2 and Den 3 square off in a whiffle ball game to get the day going. Ben hits a home run and grins from ear to ear as he rounds the bases. The boys in his den cheer wildly. Then it's off to the waterfront. Some boys play water basketball, the staff works with some of the others on swimming lessons. John passes his swimmers test. He was the one who was afraid to go in the water last summer. 12:30 PM: Lunchtime! The trading of snacks and drinks and sandwiches would put the New York Stock Exchange to shame as the dens gather around the dining hall. Some eat indoors. Some sit at the picnic tables, others in the shade of a towering oak. Some claim their spot on the stone wall. A thick gooey peanut butter sandwich is just what the doctor ordered after a morning of fun and adventure. 2:00 PM: After lunch it's off to the bb and archery ranges. The range director watches over her domain like a hawk. The boy's help each other to load the bb guns and then take turns trying to hit the distant targets. At the archery range one of the staff is helping Chris learn how to aim so he stops hitting the target of the boy next to him. 4:00 PM: As the boys wait for their turn to board their bus they talk excitedly about the six inch fish that Steve caught. "It had to be a foot long." Their very first fish story. Some are puzzling over the pieces of rope they got at scoutcraft and trying to remember if that square knot is right over left or left over right. Finally the last bus is called and the boys pile on. They wave to the staff as the parade of busses pulls away. As the busses roll on towards home, one by one the boys nodd off to sleep, dreaming about what they're going to do tomorrow. |
